In 1989 three very prominent African American businessmen walked into the offices of Sheldon L Pollack corporation in Santa Monica California and changed my life forever. I had just turned 25 years old and somehow landed a dream-job at this renowned company and cofounded their property management and leasing division called SLP management systems.
My first project was this property on Crenshaw blvd, and I was determined to succeed at all costs! Once El Pollo Loco was secured as the anchor tenant I was tasked with leasing up the balance of the space. I walked up and down crenshaw blvd and knocked on every door in every strip mall within 3 miles from the property. literally wore big holes in my shoes and actually got robbed by gunpoint on one occasion but never quit! I eventually landed a beauty supply store and convinced the local Head Start program to take the elbow space. I had never leased shopping centers before and didn’t really know what I was doing but I learned quickly and proved worth at the company.
Over the next few years, I built SLP Management systems into a formidable company that competed with the largest management companies in the Los Angeles area and hired five agents to assist me. When I would meet with potential customers to manage their properties, I would wear those old shoes with the holes in the soles and if asked how I would perform on their properties I would literally take off my shoe and show it to them! I still have the same work ethic after all these years, and I usually run circles around my competition to this day.
